On July the eighteenth, footage emerged of contaminated water being released from a drain onto a public beach on Thailand’s Samui Island. The clip was filmed and shared on Facebook by a foreign tourist, after a heavy rain in Ban Maenam district. The tourist asked the local administration to investigate and find a solution. After a media investigation, the drain was found to be linked to roads around the island, and the water released onto the beach was causing a bad smell but was diluted. A number of tourists were spotted at the beach, but if the problem is not solved, tourists may soon abandon the formerly pristine beach.
