On April the ninth, Thai fishermen moored over one thousand fishing boats in harbours in Thailand’s southern province of Pattani to put pressure on the Thai government to ease restrictions on illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing. The fishermen claim the new regulations are impractical and adversely affect their businesses. Phubate Chantanimi, President of the Fisheries Association of Pattani, said the fishermen will join other fishermen nationwide to submit a letter to the government tomorrow requesting that the memorandum of understanding, signed with the European Union regarding IUU fishing, is amended. If the government refuses, he says the Thai fishing industry will cease operations indefinitely.
