On March the twenty third, Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province ordered a thorough check of all visitors’ vehicles to make sure that no pets enter the zoo compound. The new measures are aimed at preventing any possibility of rabies being passed from pets to the zoo’s wild animals. Attaporn Sri-herun, a zoo executive, explained that any mammal can be infected with rabies and that the strict ban on pets entering the compound is a necessary precaution. Chonburi is one of the 13 provinces to be declared a rabies red zone. To date, over six thousand dogs in the district have been vaccinated against the disease.
