Dr. Uthidsak Harirattanakul, of the Public Health Office in Thailand’s coastal province of Songkhla, is warning the public against swimming in the sea off Songkla’s beaches until further notice. At least 23 beachgoers have reported being stung by jelly fish and have been treated at local hospitals, one suffered chest pains and had difficulty breathing. An expert from the country’s Poison Center suspects that the sting was from the Blue Bottle jellyfish, which is closely related to the infamous Portugese Man O’ War, and recommends that the victims wash the wound with salt water or an ammonia and water solution, but never with fresh water.
