Charn Vachiradej, a prison warden in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province, had ordered the renovation of an unoccupied area of land next to the prison and is turning it to an affordable curry and rice shop. The aim of the project is to help inmates transition from prison back into society by teaching them job skills. This will help them earn income and help reduce recidivism rates. The food at Ruenjun Krua-Thai restaurant is prepared by female inmates and is proving popular among the locals due to its cleanliness and affordable prices. Statistics show that about eighty percent of the prisoners in Thailand have been convicted of drug related crimes.
