On October the seventh, the Deputy Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, or DNP, visited the famous Maya Bay in Thailand’s Krabi province before announcing that the popular day trip destination is to remain closed indefinitely. The bay was originally placed off-limits to tourists for four months, but the temporary closure won’t be long enough to allow recovery from the damage caused by tourism. The DNP suggests that visitors go to other nearby bays which are equally beautiful. The National Park’s office director revealed that tourists’ chemical sunscreens are a major factor in coral bleaching and death.
