On September the fifth, national artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat, unveiled the clay mold for his statue of Saman Gunan, the Thai Navy SEAL diver who died in July while helping to rescue thirteen footballers from Chiangrai’s Tham Luang Cave. The sculpting took one hundred and thirteen days and the 2.4 meter tall statue features the Hero in a diving suit and the 12 boys with their coach represented by a wild boar and piglets. The mold will be sent to a foundry in Bangkok, and is expected take a further two months to complete. Then it will be moved to the Tham Luang museum in Chiangrai. The artist hopes the memorial will become world famous.
