On April the thirteenth, people in Thailand’s troubled Southern province of Pattani have been celebrating New Year amid heightened security. Locals and foreign tourists, mostly from Malaysia and Singapore, gathered in the centre of town where one main road has been turned into a tunnel of water, to enjoy the water battles. Alcohol and revealing dress are prohibited during the celebration to prevent harassment. The road is heavily controlled by armed military but, though they are armed, they are still splashed and covered with white powder, in line with the Songkran tradition.
