On March the thirteenth, seventy elephants feasted on over two tons of fruit in Thailand’s former capital of Ayutthaya as Thailand celebrated their national animal on Thai Elephant Day. The Elephant Foundation and Elephant Camp laid out a twenty table long fruit buffet and invited children and locals to feed them. It is hoped the children will learn about and help to conserve these elegant animals. Monks led the blessing ceremony and worshipped at the elephant shrine. Elephants were commonly used by Thai kings as their main form of transport when fighting in historical wars.
