On February the seventh, police responded to a hostage situation in Mae Sot, a border town in Thailand’s Tak Province. A 3 year old boy was being held hostage by a knife wielding man from Myanmar, apparently under the influence of drugs. After 2 hours of unsuccessful negotiation, the man demanded a 3 wheeled motorcycle to take him and the boy to the border checkpoint. The bike’s driver was a police officer in disguise and, during a stop for a drink, the hostage taker was charged by police and dozens of villagers. The boy is now safe and the perpetrator is in police custody.
