After photos of grilled sea horses on sale in Thailand’s Pattaya Floating Market hit social media, Manat Meepong, the manager of the Floating Market, said that he has terminated the vendor’s contract and will ensure that grilled sea horses are no longer sold in his popular market. The vendor said that grilled sea horses on a stick cost 150 baht and Chinese tourists are the main buyers. Seahorses are not protected under Thai law, but importing or exporting them is banned by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES, to which Thailand is a signatory.
