On November the twenty third a rare species of whale washed up on a beach near Thailand’s Southern town of Pattani. Villagers tried to save the 7 meter long mammal by returning it to the water, but it was already too weak to survive. Villagers said they had never seen this kind of whale before, so they asked the experts who identified it as a rare Omura’s, or dwarf fin whale, a species which was recognized only as recently as 2003. This is the first sighting of an Omura’s whale in Pattani’s bay, it was added to Thailand’s list of protected species last year.
