Late on October 18th, Veterinarians were called in to help treat a young wild elephant which had fallen into a large canal in Thailand’s Pitsanuloke Province. How long the pachyderm had been there is unknown, but he was seen floating along the canal the previous day.
Around 100 villagers and local officials had tried to pull the weakened elephant out of the water unsuccessfully. Then a backhoe was brought in and rescued the animal. Locals named the elephant “Chompu” after the canal in which he was trapped for at least 48 hours.
12 year old Chompu was too weak to stand up on his own but was able to eat some food. The plan is to move Chompu to the Elephant hospital in Lampang.
