A famous coffee shop in Thailand is offering its customers black plastic cups throughout October to show respect for and to mourn the passing of King Bhumibol Aduljadej.
Kraisit Fusuwan, Managing Director of Coffee Wawi in Chiangmai, said that 50,000 black cups are being offered in all branches, including in Bangkok, during the Royal Funeral month of October. The black cups, rather than the original orange ones, are offered to commemorate the king who introduced the first coffee plants to the North part of Thailand to replace opium in 1969.
The royal coffee project ended opium farming and provided a new career for the local people. Today, some of the world’s best Arabica coffee is grown in Northern Thailand.
